Professor David O'Brart has been a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in private practice and at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London since 1996. The Guy's and St Thomas' group contains one of the world's leading medical schools and the Ophthalmology Department has an excellent reputation both in the UK and internationally. Professor O'Brart was the Director of Glaucoma and Corneal Laser and Refractive Surgery within this department from 1996 to 2006 and since 2006 the Director of Refractive, Cornea and Anterior Segment Surgery. In recognition of his clinical research, he was appointed as Professor of Corneal Science at King's College, University of London in 2015.
Following his qualification as an Ophthalmic Surgeon in 1990, he trained in cornea and small-incision cataract surgery. He spent two years at the United Medical and Dental Schools, University of London, investigating the role of Excimer laser refractive and corneal surgery. This research led to the completion of a Doctorate in Medicine. Upon completion of his ophthalmic surgical training at St. Thomas' Hospital, London and Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, he undertook a fellowship with Professor Weinreb at the internationally renowned Shiley Eye centre in San Diego, California, where he studied advanced techniques in Glaucoma.
Professor O'Brart is past president and treasurer of the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, a past council member and secretary of the British Society of Refractive Surgeons, past president and
secretary of the Southern Ophthalmological Society and past board member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He has organised and chaired over fifty symposia on refractive, corneal and cataract surgery and glaucoma at national and international meetings. He has co-authored three books on corneal topography, refractive and corneal surgery and contributed numerous chapters to international ophthalmic text books.

He was a founding member of the Microsurgical Skills Committee and is an examiner and specialist advisor to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence and the Medical Health Research Authority for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He continues to take an active interest in research in the fields of refractive surgery, cornea and external eye disease, cataract surgery and glaucoma with over one hundred and thirty scientific publications in peer-reviewed ophthalmic journals and an international reputation in the field of corneal, cataract and refractive surgery. His current clinical and laboratory research is directed at optimising treatments for Keratoconus and Dry Eye and femtosecond laser technology for cataract and corneal surgery. He is regarded as one of the leading international researchers in the field of Corneal Collagen Cross-linking and Laser Refractive Surgery.
